Welcome to Out of Bounds Sounds.com.
The Out of Bounds collective was established in 2004 by DJs Mark Forshaw, Neil Bailey and Dave 'Soulizm' Harvie. We hope to bring a fresh mixture of Deep House, Techno, Broken Beats & Eclectic soulful sounds to Liverpool and beyond. We will be featuring regular downloadable mixes that will represent the full range of music we love. You can also look forward to guest mixes from some of our favourite local DJs.

Mark Forshaw was drawn towards the club scene in 95 when he was regularly found on the dancefloor at both the Full On and Voodoo nights. The music of DJs and producers such as Stacey Pullen, Carl Craig, Garnier, Hawtin, Mills, Robert Hood and Voodoo resident Andy Nicholson proved highly influential on Mark and by 1997 he was DJing regularly at the Mentalist night which stylistically covered everything from hip hop, drum & bass, deep house and hard techno. After many great parties this night folded due to the closure of the Red Zone Venue. Next up was Mark’s collaboration with fellow Voodoo-head Scott McGill : TFunkshun. Starting small at The Lemon Lounge they were determined to bring quality music back to a then stale Liverpool scene, it didn’t take long for people to notice and Voodoo asked Mark and Scott to host the upstairs room at Le Bateau. Following on from these memorable nights T-Funkshun moved to The Masque Theatre and later to the more intimate surroundings of the Magnet and Cavern venues. From 2001 until the night's demise in late 2005 Mark and residents Scott and Dave Lawton played alongside some of the underground's most well respected DJs and inspirational producers - Mike Grant, Melchior, Dan Bell, Damon Wild, Matthew Dear, Rolando, Baby Ford, Freddy Fresh, Luke Solomon, Stacey Pullen, Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir, Derrick May, DJ Bone, Surgeon, Kenny Larkin and Terrence Parker. Although TFunkshun has now ended, it's fair to say that there's sure to be some mad one off parties in the future.

As well as residency at TFunkshun, Mark has guested at Lost Soul, Havaganda, Highjacked, Wonky, Mahogani Boots, Bommynite, Disted Twisco, Aztec, Boodha Bar, BabyCream, Disco Science, Bambity, Voodoo and Dust (Bed, Sheffield). He is a versatile DJ who is just as happy playing funk and disco as he is playing more cutting edge styles. Not one to stick to one style, he just loves good music of any kind and his sets will often feature the sounds of deep Detroit, body and soul, quirky glitch, jacking house and broken beats. This range of styles is what makes up the Out of Bounds sound.

Mark’s love of music led him to release a track in 2002 entitled “Revolution” for Turning Point Records which was his homage to the influential style of Detroit minimalism and proved popular with DJs Richie Hawtin and Magda. Watch this space for forthcoming productions and collaborations....

David 'Soulizm' Harvie has been spinning since 1996, mixing up everything from hip-hop to disco through to house and techno. Initially inspired to dj by mid-nineties hip-hop mixtapes, it was visits to Cream, Bugged Out and Voodoo that really shaped his style and direction. Whilst happy playing an eclectic mix of dance music, his skills are put to best use playing a jacking blend of deep house, house and techno, always fluid and funky.

Inspiration has come from many great djs over the years, from the world renowned such as Derrick Carter, Derrick May, Sneak, Little Louie Vega, Danny Krivit, Gemini, Stacey Pullen, Theo Parrish, Chris Duckenfield, Joe Claussell, Larry Heard, Osunlade, Dominic Capello etc (the list could go on and on!), through to lesser well known but equally dope local talent like Mark Forshaw, Neil Bailey, Scott McGill, Bill Heckle etc.

Soulizm has had a number of weekly residencies both at home and during times spent living abroad, amongst them a year long stint at Babycream bar in Liverpool. He has played at renowned club nights such as TFunkshun and Chibuku in Liverpool, and venues such as The Masque, The Magnet and The Cavern (Liverpool) and The Republic (Sheffield).

Over the years several of his mixes have aired online, and he has hosted a weekly student radio mix-show. He also co-founded the monthly Out of Bounds night with Mark Forshaw and Neil Bailey, which aims to give exposure to deeply rooted dance music in its many forms, from broken beats to minimal techno, with a large dose of house thrown in.

Currently on assignment in the South Coast, he can be found keeping it real every Saturday night at Karma bar in Bournemouth. A truly passionate house-head and music-lover in general, he will continue to spread the word through his own djing and support of all things quality in underground dance culture. Keep an eye out for him in your town.

Neil Bailey As a teenager Neil was interested in Punk bands like Wire, and then Industrial music like Throbbing Gristle and Whitehouse. These bands, and the likes of Coil, remain an influence to this day. It was only in 1992 that Neil was first introduced to live dance music and DJ culture via an Orb gig, this was continued via an Underworld gig in Manchester circa 1993. His 1st proper club attended was Bugged Out at Sankeys in Mcr, 1996. Throughout 1997 Neil was also a regular at DJ Matt Thompson’s eclectic beats night Prescription in Mcr. He also attended Drama, where he was first introduced to Deep House via Andrew Weatherall’s sets. In the past he has also been a Voodoo and Tfunkshun regular, where he first met Mark and Soulizm. Neil had previously played at the Lemon Lounge in 2002 and also played the backroom of Tfunkshun with John Twigg in 2004.

In 2004 Neil helped to found Out of Bounds with Mark and Soulizm, their mission was to bring a fresh mixture of underground dance sounds to Liverpool. Their differing styles of Broken Beats, Deep House, Techno, Disco and all points inbetween were played at various Liverpool venues throughout 2005. They played over 12 Out of Bounds gigs together.

Neil’s own particular style as a DJ is rooted in Deep House, but can take in anything from Broken Beats to more Tech-edged sounds. He also enjoys playing ecelectic sets as mentioned above, featuring anything from Disco and Soul to Punk and nearly always including his all time favourite bands: Ian Dury and the Blockheads and Talking Heads.

Scott McGill Clubbing on his birthday (1994) at Voodoo switched Scott onto the sounds of techno, acid house, and electro. It was here he heard the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Green Velvet, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Stacey Pullen, Laurent Garnier and Robert Hood. Not long after he became an avid collector of vinyl and it's rarities, which duly led to djing. From here his djing skill was recognised and has led to him playing at clubs such as Ideal (Wolverhampton), Bad Taste Sessions (Ireland), Hanky Panky (Peterborough), and Force (Leicester), Superconductor (Leeds), Voodoo (Liverpool), Alcatraz (Liverpool) and of course his own night - T-Funkshun.
T-Funkshun was a challenge to bring Detroit techno, and deep soulful music back to Liverpool¹s nightlife. Scott's versatility playing anything from jazz, disco to electronic music, and determination were reciprocated by good friend Mark Forshaw; so subsequently turned T-Funkshun into the success that we know.
Nearly 5 years of bringing some of the world's greatest talents to the UK, for the first time in some cases, has left him with a great scrapbook, CV, and a bulging contacts book. Now T-Funkshun has been halted so Scott can fill his potential more personally as a dj, artist, and lover of music. Keep your ear to the ground. www.tfunkshun.com

Nick Hardie An awakening courtesy of the late 80's Manchester scene has sent Nick on a decade and a half musically journey which has landed in the (occasional) T-Funkshun back room via residencies in Blackpool and London. Despite some amazing nights at T-Funkshun recently the highlight is still when he played on the same bill as the late Edwin Starr. With a musical outlook that suggest house and techno were evolutionary and that while the 4 to the floor beat is often best, it's not the only option, his sets nearly always touch base in Detroit and New York but spanning four decades of music rather than four months. www.tfunkshun.com

David Lawton
Cheeky Chappy Dave was born in Liverpool and has spent most of his time there apart from brief stints living abroad. Musical roots go back to an obsession with Bob Marley as a small child and a heavy exposure to break-dance in the eighties, which led him to impress girls at his infant school with a deadly repertoire of body-pop moves.
If there is one word that adequately describes David’s music and approach, it is uncompromising. With a complete disregard for the moronic trends that surround us on all sides, David plays records as someone whose interest lies solely in representing the music he loves and believes needs to be heard. Challenging and educating the dance floor is as important as anything else, this is something that fits in well with the T-Funkshun idea of "Edutainment". David is a minimalist at heart, fascinated by the potential of repetition, texture and space within music. Techno, Minimal House, Glitch and Electronica all play a part in the make-up of his sets. Since day one at T-Funkshun, David has never aimed to play to what the crowd expect, a DJ that truly plays for himself as much as anybody else regardless of the occasion, something that has earned him great respect amongst his peers and listeners. David has played in the UK and Czech Republic so far and has plans to create infrequent parties that will showcase local and national live acts in Liverpool. www.tfunkshun.com

Alex Webb After discovering the joys of electronic music in his mid-teens, Webb first began DJing in 1999 when he came to university in Liverpool (wisely investing his first student loan on a set of decks and a lot of records). At the beginning Drum n Bass was his first love and he was heavily influenced by the likes of Andy C, Ray Keith and LTJ Bukem. As he got older he became exposed to many different varieties of dance music, including Breakbeat, House, Techno, and Electro. Off the back of these influences he began Disted Twisco in 2000, with Nathan Jones (who now runs one of the countries top poetry nights ‘Fiction’). These days Webb's sets are an eclectic affair and his wide-ranging taste in music was one of the main reasons for Disted Twisco's diverse line-ups. Some of his favorite labels include Output, Ram Records, Kingsize, Warp, Rotters Golf Club and Environ to name but a few. Some of the artists currently doing it for him are John Tejada, Metro Area, Luke Vibert and Mu. As well as DJing in Disted Twisco he has played a many other club nights in Liverpool and the North West including, Gutterfunk, Lost Soul, Freak, Sequence and Aztec.
Disted Twisco is now sadly over but Webb will continue play out around Liverpool and the North West with fellow DT resident Ben Hughes so watch this space.

Bill Heckle Inspired by Hawtin's 'Decks, EFX and 909' mix and various jaunts to Bugged Out!, he decided that techno made all other music obsolete. Years down the line and much wiser, Bill plays a wide range of music in his sets, as long as its deep and rhythmic. Bill could play a straight house set or a full on techno set depending on the time and the place, but prefers to play longer sets which encompass all styles of good music. He tends to be drawn to the sounds that eminate from Chicago and Detroit.
Bill has featured in numerous publications such as in dance magazine Mixmag after winning their bedroom heroes competition and the Liverpool Echo. His DJing has led to him playing at some of Liverpool's top clubs, including T-Funkshun, Aztec and the legendary Voodoo alongside his own night Alcatraz. He has also played as far afield as Glasgow (Pressure @ The Arches) and Manchester (Tribal Sessions @ Sankeys Soap).
Some of the artists he has played alongside include: Theo Parrish, Dave Clarke, Surgeon, Slam, Ben Sims, James Ruskin, Steve Bug, Craig Richards, Richard Fearless (Death In Vegas), Dj Rolando, Rue East/Mark Broom, Regis, DJ Bone, Magda, Steve Rachmad and Neil Landstrumm.

Sam Baron is resident at Chester's Mi Casa night and now Liverpool's Techno and House institution Alcatraz. Sam's skills have lead to him playing alongside some of the best in the scene such as Regis, Deetron, James Ruskin and Steve Rachmad. Sam's diverse musical tastes are evident in his sets, which will take you to Detroit, Chicago and back.

Binny started DJing back in 2000, and has been playing at Chester's "Mi Casa" night for the past few years. After making his Liverpool debut in August 2005, he is now a resident and promoter for techno night Alcatraz with Bill Heckle and John Demonic, where he has warmed up for many DJs including Ben Sims, Steve Rachmad, James Ruskin and Regis. His musical style has been heavily influenced by the Detroit DJs - Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Gary Martin, Eddie Fowlkes and Underground Resistance, as well as others from Europe - Jeroen, Steve Rachmad, and our very own Surgeon.

John 'Demonic' Heckle Resident at Alcatraz and destroyer of many a dancefloor, including that of GimpFist at the Beluga Bar, John Demonic is an acomplished DJ and producer with a suprising list of achievements. Amongst these achiements he rates sharing the turntables with heroes Regis Surgeon and Christian Wunsch the most memorable. Inspired by the Biimingham and Spanish harder industrial sounding techno, John has a discerning taste in music, and this is shown in his sets which will encompass anything from the staple sound of offbeat techno to Detroit techno and electro. John has recently had his first production signed to Harvey Lane's RSB records under the psudonem 'HeK'. The track, entitled 'popPadom Preach', which was released in April 2006, has had plays from the likes of his heroes Surgeon and Regis.

Project 1 consists of Sam Tawil and Chris Cox, the two founding members of Transition (www.transitionrecords.co.uk). Originally from West Yorkshire, Sam and Chris met each other through music; playing in a band together for a few years before university brought things to a halt. Time took its course and although the pair stayed close friends they didn't have any musical involvement with each other for some time. This changed when they eventually found themselves working together again as a result of their mutual love for Detroit Techno. Like countless others they felt rejuvenated and inspired by the music of Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills, Derrick May and Robert Hood (to name a few). The realisation of what this music can do was initially driven home further by their experiences at Voodoo and Bugged Out! and, in more recent times, the most excellent T-Funkshun and Disted Twisco. Eventually they took the decision to try their hand at promoting their own night; initially at The Magnet, with the short lived Music is Music, followed by Highjacked which ran at The Lemon Lounge and Hannahs Bar. However, wanting to develop other ideas and projects, the pair struck upon the idea of starting Transition, which would become the home for all their activity. Ideas and concepts for Transition were, and still are, evolving constantly. Primarily setting up the company as a music retailer, the hope is to spread the word and provide people with the quality music they deserve in Liverpool. The project is both exciting and ambitious - people can expect big things in the coming months.
Whilst they will always give people a good party one of the main premises of Project 1's approach is to expose people to as much new, groundbreaking, underground music as possible. Call it techno, house, hi-tech funk, electro or whatever you like -just expect the best electronic music available.
